Three Houses Audition Notice

Theatre Elision is seeking non-Equity local Twin Cities performers 18 and over for Three Houses by Dave Malloy.

Three Houses is a post-pandemic open mic night parable about magic, madness, and the end of the world.  Three people, each alone in their respective homes, haunted by their grandparents…And all three hear the Big Bad Wolf scratching at the door.

We highly recommend listening to the soundtrack before auditioning to get a sense of the roles, storytelling styles, and difficulty of music.  You can find the soundtrack here.

Seeking

SADIE: (F3 - G#5)  Bubbly and obsessive.  Experiencing first heartbreak, hiding her pain with a video game.  (Also plays Pookie, Latvian dragon figurine)

BECKETT: (G2 - F4 with strong falsetto to C5) Intense and shattered, recently divorced.  He starts out full of optimism, but becomes increasingly unhinged and agoraphobic through lockdown.  A little mystical.  (Also plays Zippy, video game animal character.)

WOLF: (B2 - G4) Sly and charismatic.  Also, big and bad.

GRANDMA: (D3 - B4) Maternal, kind and enigmatic.

GRANDFATHER: (A2 - E4) Paternal, kind and enigmatic.

The role of Susan has been cast.

Understudies

We will also be seeking a choreographer, violinist, cellist, and french horn player (all paid.)  While this is not the focus of these auditions, feel free to send us a resume and email of interest if you’d like to be considered.

Although the characters imply certain ages, we are open to all performers, 18+, for any roles.

We work hard to be an inclusive, supportive and welcoming organization, which includes our casting process. If this show speaks to you, we encourage you to audition and share your work with us.

What to Prepare

We have chosen cuts for each character, which can be found here.  If you plan on auditioning for Wolf, please sing Beckett’s cuts.  You are welcome to audition for more than one character, but please choose no more than two for the sake of time.  We will consider you for all roles you are interested in, regardless of whether you sing for that role.

The pieces you can choose from are:

  • Sadie: The Desert, m. 34 - 66

  • Beckett: New Life m. 13 - 48

  • Wolf: New Life m. 13 - 48

  • Grandma: The Berries and the Plums: m. 18 - 41 (please note, this is written in tenor clef and is meant to be sung down the octave - but feel free to sing it up an octave if that is a better fit)

  • Grandfather: The Berries and the Plums m. 43 - 54

You are not expected to memorize this material.  We are looking for comfort with the music and strong storytelling, but we welcome music in hand.

The pieces that will be used for callbacks are The Village, Love Always Leaves You in the End, It’s Too Soon, Stones, and Happy/Crazy.
